About Us
Principles and Personnel:
Steven P. Lewis
Steve is the Owner and RME of APEX Painting. Responsibilities includes estimating, human resources, quality control, payroll and budgetary matters, employee hiring and review, contractual affairs, billings/invoicing, and the daily propagation of company affairs.
Born, raised, and educated in Pennsylvania, Steve moved to Houston, Texas after college. After over 5 years in the Oil & Gas shipping business (freight broker), the move to Hawaii occurred in 1987. Steve then embarked on a career in the painting trade. A steady graduation from painter, foreman, supervisor, estimator, quality control and project manager took place over some 12 years, primarily for the larger commercial and industrial painting companies based on the Island of Oahu. Steve became a licensed painting contractor in 1999. The transition was an easy one due his many years in a supervisory capacity in the industry.
Steve Lewis is a member (Secretary/Treasurer) of Business Networking International (BNI), East Hawaii Chapter. Steve, his wife Laura and their three children are very active in the Kamuela youth, civic and charitable programs.
Lauravelle Y. Lewis
Laura is the Co-Owner of APEX Painting. She is the office manager and is responsible for many important functions that keep APEX Painting running smoothly. Laura handles all the necessary communications, e-mails, faxing, accounting matters, and human resource affairs that surface daily in any business venture. Born and raised on the Big Island, Laura retired from her position at the Keahole-Kona airport after some dozen years in the visitor industry. Laura & Steve were married in 1993 and have three children.
Larry Ibana-Supervisor
After serving for over ten years at the Hilton-Waikoloa as the Staff Painting Supervisor, Larry made the move to APEX Painting in 2003. A desire to expand his painting resume’ and to participate more in a “field” environment, Larry made the right move by joining APEX. He has thrived and flourished in his responsibilities of supervisor, quality control, quality painting and leadership. Larry is a “turn-key mechanic” in the painting industry. In every aspect of paint finishing, supervisory, educating crew, house-keeping, and dealing with our customers, Larry excels. He usually can be found on our projects that require the utmost decorum and customer relations, such as hotel remodels, open businesses, and other jobs where our customers are present and “on site”. Married with two little boys, we are proud to have Larry’s services available to our company, and look forward to many more years of his excellent skills representing APEX Painting.
Scotty Burns-Supervisor
An award winning angler and one of the top off-shore fishermen on the Big Island, Scotty is meticulous, extremely skillful, and very aggressive. Like his approach to catching record-breaking Ulua, Scotty’s approach to his career in the industry is detailed, planned well, and executed precisely. Scotty came to APEX Painting in 2002 as a journeyman painter. He became a foreman within his first year, and shortly thereafter rose to his supervisory capacity. Scotty has a long-suit in identifying talent and delegating responsibilities accordingly. There’s has been no project; residential or commercial, that Scotty hasn’t brought to a successful conclusion. A real pro when it comes to customer relations, we cannot imagine APEX Painting without Scott Burns on board.
Scotty, his wife and children reside on the Hilo side of the Island.
Robert Carvalho-Supervisor
Making the drive all the way from the Puna district for over six years, Robert is the “Bull” of APEX Painting. A quality painter with a sharp eye for detail, Robert has been known to tangle with some of our most challenging projects. Always in top physical condition, he’s usually tackling the projects that require endurance and patience, trying conditions and a “Big Picture” mindset. Construction work can at times be a dusty, hot and perspiration filled endeavor. If your desire is to have quality finishes under these conditions, that Robert Carvahlo is your guy. Robert is also an excellent source for training and teaching the correct techniques required for custom/quality painters. Mindful of safety at all times, he’s an expert at rigging, staging and job-site mechanics. Robert is a vital cog in our organization and serves as Steve’s substitute at BNI when needed. Robert is married to his High School sweetheart, and they have two children.
Staff & Crew:
APEX Painting averages between 20-30 staff and crew, depending upon our work-load at the given time.
Every employee is trained in fall-protection, hazardous communication, and OSHA/HOISH safety requirements. No employee or painter is dispatched to any project without this training, and a proper assessment of his or her skill set. APEX Painting is not a “swim-short & flip-flop” painting company. We are a formal and disciplined team of professional staff and painters. All painters and painters’ helpers are qualified and trained for their duties before assigned to a job-site.
APEX Painting insist that our staff and crew have a positive approach to their responsibilities, with every expectation of completing our projects in a timely fashion with quality results. We do not tolerate complaining, disrespect, negativity, or employees who refuse to “get along”. Negativity on the job-site usually spreads quickly, and normally cuts down on production and quality of work. Our lead-staff and supervisors are trained to spot such activity early, and either correct it or remove the source from the project.
APEX Painting trains our employees to not engage in dangerous conditions on our projects, and has a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and drug use. We also maintain a zero-tolerance policy for verbal and physical abuse, gender and racial misconduct, and other divisive conditions.
